Profhilo® is not a mesotherapy product, neither is it a dermal filler. Profhilo® is a stabilised hyaluronic acid (HA) but without any chemical crosslinking agents – the first injectable of its kind. Profhilo® is in effect a ‘beneath the skin’ hyaluronic acid moisturising treatment indicated for the treatment of skin laxity and is free of 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE) – a viscous liquid, present in many HA fillers.

Although crosslinking chemicals, such as BDDE, in small doses in dermal fillers has been indicated to be safe, the BDDE-free concept could be appealing to consumers who are wary of synthetic chemicals being used in products.

Profhilo® does not create the volumetric lift or volume replacement associated with cross-linked dermal fillers, however, when injected precisely into the tissue, the ultra-pure hyaluronic acid stimulates collagen and elastin, attracting water in the deeper layers of the skin. As a stabilised product, the activity on dermal cells will last longer than that of a non-stabilised gel. 

During this time the stimulation of four different types of collagen and elastin takes place by slow release of hyaluronic acid. Owing to its characteristics, it is an ideal treatment for challenging areas, such as the neck and perioral areas, where we may not see the significant volume loss, but where skin has lost elasticity. Overall, patients can expect increased firmness, elasticity and an overall improved quality of skin, with the effects lasting up to six months.

Results can be noticeable after 1-2 days but the full effect will be seen after one week. In some patients the improvement is not visible after one treatment: for this reason 2 treatments are recommended. Results will last 4-6 months after which the treatment can be repeated

As with any injectable treatment there are minor risks, including bruising and swelling, as well as infection, allergic reaction, vascular compromise and nerve damage; although these are rare. From a safety perspective, Profhilo® is highly biocompatible, owing to the fact that it is made from natural hyaluronic acid and stabilised without the addition of chemical cross-linking agents.

Usual contraindications include patients with bleeding disorders, immune-compromised patients and those with unrealistic expectations.

Profhilo® treatments are minimally invasive and therefore downtime is minimal. You should be able to return to your normal activities immediately. However, as with most cosmetic procedures, you should avoid:

• Physical strain or sports on the first day after the treatment.
• Further cosmetic therapies for the first 2 days after treatment.
• Sauna, steam bath, icy temperatures or UV radiation by the sun or a solarium for two weeks after the treatment. 
• Stay hydrated (1.5-2.0 litres water per day)
